The Fourth Edition of the Harambee International Award “Conveying Africa” was presented in Rome.
A press conference was held in Rome at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, February 24 in order to present the Fourth Edition of the Harambee International Award “Conveying Africa”.
“We would like to contribute to spreading a more genuine understanding of African people, their daily routines and normal life despite the tragic circumstances they often find themselves facing”, Giovanni Mottini, president of Harambee Africa International, states in explaining the purpose of the contest. “Contrary to the trends the mass media disseminates, emphasizing catastrophes and epidemics and, thus, spreading the idea of afro-pessimism even more, we would like to shed light on the daily stories of individuals who are driven by the desire to discover what it is that makes all of us the same. Genuine understanding can only come about by beginning with the commonplace and this is what true solidarity is fostered from”.
During the conference, Linda Corbi, the international coordinator of H.A.I., recalled the different editions of the Award, explaining the reasons behind their choice of winners. Diego Contreras, dean of the faculty of Social Institutional Communications at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and President of the Jury of the Harambee Award, brought the meeting to a close, stating the characteristics of the Award and giving information on the composition of the jury which will examine the competitor’s work. He said, “we have chosen African students from the faculty of Communications in order to combine sensitivity about the issues and technical skills”.
The award ceremony will take place in Rome in November 2010.
