Harambee - All together for Africa
On the occasion of Christmas 2006, Harambee has launched a Fund-Raising to raise money for the projects began this year. Supporting these projects is a simple and responsible way to get involved in the sustenance of the four developmental initiatives in Africa.
It is a way of supporting Africans who believe in the future of Africa and to share optimism. Below are the principal characteristics of these 4 projects (country, sponsoring agency and approximate cost).
1. Creating a medical clinic at Kinshasa, promoted by Monkole Hospital (Democratic Republic of Congo). The initiative is directed to the benefit of mothers and children from three semi-rural zones of the Congolese capital, and will benefit more than 600 mothers and 1000 children. Annual cost: € 100,000 (one hundred thousand euros).
2. Crafts Training School, promoted by the Association for the Homeless (La Association Accueil des Sans-Abri or ASA) [Madagascar]. It has created a Center for Crafts Training where courses in crafts are developed to teach various crafts and skills in order to enable students to set up small-scale commercial ventures of their own. As well as the technical training offered, the Centre also provides more general training in literacy, hygiene, home management, etc. The Association has a micro-credit system to ensure the economic viability of the developing businesses. Once the training period is complete and the business has been set up, the Association continues to offer ongoing support to ex-trainees in their work. Annual Cost: € 119,604 (one hundred and nineteen thousand six hundred and four euros).
3. Teacher enhancement Programmes, promoted by the Strathmore University (Kenya). This is a cycle of formation for teachers and school managers. The goal is to give the Kenyan teacher back his or her sense of identity as a contributor to the moral fiber of the nation. The project proposes to reach 4,500 teachers and school managers over the next three years. Annual Cost: € 293,630.00 (two hundred and ninety three thousand, six hundred and thirty euros)
4. Vocational Training Centre – VTC for Women “Josephine Bakhita” promoted by the Canossian Foundation. (Sudan). The project aims to empower women with new skills and techniques, and to give them the opportunity to adopt these skills for income generating activities. At the same time, the project will contribute to emphasizing the role of women in African culture and Identity. Annual Cost: € 200.000 (Two hundred thousand euros)
