2011 Harambee Award for the Promotion of Women in Africa

The winner is Christiane Kadjo, Ivory Coast. Christiane Kadjo, an Ivorian woman who has been dedicating to improving the women conditions for 20 years will be awarded next October 27 in Madrid.

The Harambee Award aims at giving visibility to those who work in support of equal opportunities for African women and Christiane is a worthy representative. After a degree in economics, she worked in prestigious companies in Africa and Europe, holding positions of great responsibility, nevertheless she decided to leave her job to devote to the woman empowerment. She founded an NGO which was able to set two vocational training centers in Abidjan (the capital) and Yamoussoukro.

Currently the two institutes are particularly committed to supporting victims of violent post-electoral conflict that devastated the country, exacerbating the already existing tensions between different communities.
The unprecedented crisis erupted following the disputed presidential election of November 2010 between the forces of President-elect Ouattara, who gradually took control of the economic capital of the country, and Gbagbo’s militants, outgoing Head of State. Even today there are reports of clashes and in a context of high poverty and violence, women are the most affected. For this reason, Kadjo trains young women to make them indipendent.

Christiane Kadjo will be in Rome between 21 and 23 October, she will receive the prize in Madrid, Thursday 27 October at 19.30, during a ceremony organized by the Spanish Committee of Harambee Africa International.
