Crafts Training School

Promoter: Association for the Homeless (La Association Accueil des Sans-Abri or ASA).

The ASA has been working in Madagascar since 1991 for families in the capital city who suffer from lack of qualifications, precarious employment conditions, poor hygiene facilities and insufficient educational provision for children. To address these situations the Centre for Crafts Training was created, where courses in crafts are developed to teach various crafts and skills in order to enable students to set up small-scale commercial ventures of their own.
Harambee contribution in 2006 : 45,0000 euro.

Harambee supported:
a)courses in crafts to teach various crafts and skills in order to enable students to set up small-scale commercial ventures of their own
b)courses in literacy, hygiene, home management, etc. During the training period (about one year) the families are given economic support by the Association so that they can concentrate on the courses and not have to worry about financial problems. The Association also implements administrative procedures to register the future craftsmen with the national chamber of commerce so that their work is officially recognized. Additionally, the Association has a micro-credit system to ensure the economic viability of the developing businesses. Once the training period is complete and the business has been set up, the Association continues to offer ongoing support to ex-trainees in their work.

Beneficiaries: 75 heads of families per year (70% women and 30% men). Families have an average of 5 children.

Project to improve academic standards at the Vakinankaratra Specialist High School

Local Entity :
"Diocese d'Antsirabe” - ECAR
Harambee contribution: 35,894.70 €
Duration: 1 year

Description of the project :
The objective of this project is to improve the educational services provided by the Diocese of Ramanarivo in Madagascar. It is a specialized high school for the young people in the Diocese. Only about 0.6% of the population of Madagascar is able to complete high school and many are unable to further their education at the university of Tananarive.

The High School wishes to fill this gap by starting a four- course programme of specialization for the most sought-after fields in Africa: communication, tourism, management and education. The course will last three years and will have a curriculum similar to that used in higher professional studies. The donations received for this project will go to setting up a library, a computer room and to purchasing materials and furniture for three new classrooms.
