To Serve is to Live

"To Serve Is to Live" is an autobiographical journey of reflection on leadership thoughts and action in nation-building in Nigeria. It covers a period from the 1970s when as a nineteen-year old student-leader, the author first began to interact closely with senior government officials of cabinet ranking, through to the closing months of the second millennium, though with additional appraisal of the Nigerian state in the 21st century, so far.

It is also a story of character building, the search for values in a society that sometimes appears drained of all things dear. For the most part, it is a tale of persistent quest to be principle-centred in the pursuit of what the author calls the two "immortalities". In pursuit of spiritual and material immortality, the author finds a common denominator: sacrifice for the common good otherwise known as a sense of service. In reviewing the evolution of the Nigeria political economy, Pat Utomi uses the measure of service as life to evaluate how Nigeria has been led. using the unique style almost akin to novel writing in treating very weighty issues, he develops a very readable book that captures the soul of the Nigerian experience. This inspiring book is recommended to captains of industry, politicians, economic thinkers and youths of all persuasions.
