When it became clear that the new coronavirus leaving China was destined to become a pandemic, international concern quickly focused on how countries with weak health systems, most of which are in Africa, would be affected. It was feared that they would quickly be overwhelmed by the virus. In fact, African countries may have the broadest field experience in dealing with outbreaks of viral diseases. From Ebola to Lasso Fever to Zika, African countries have faced more epidemics in living memory.
